Judges

The book of Judges appears to be a primal, barbaric, grusome book. It is. So why study it and why is it even in the Bible? Well, it is more. It is a book about humanity and our propensity for evil. Its stories hold back nothing in relaying human sinfulness. But even more powerful than the evil present is a long-suffering God who again and again shows his mercy and his grace. When his people cry out to him in their suffering he hears their cries and delivers them. He uses humans to help, but even these judges are far from heroic and pure. God is the only real hero in the book. And these stories point to our need for him as our ultimate hero. A perfect Saviour. Jesus. The book of Judges is filled with stories from long ago, but it is still our story today.
